Plot
The Lady’s firstborn could not be satisfied with the flesh of the earth or animals.[break] He refused the milk of his mother, and so, desperate, the Lady opened a life-giving vein and allowed him to drink his fill.[break] The Lady’s secondborn was as wild as the trees and made his place among the animals.[break] He would not sit quietly among his cousins or his brother, and so, conflicted, the Lady gave him a pelt to run in.[break] The Lady’s thirdborn came quiet and still into the world.[break] She did not speak because her words bent the world around her, and so, rapt, the Lady taught her the right path.[break] Upon her death, the Lady gave pieces of herself for her children to protect.[break] Her firstborn’s people received her heart, from which life-giving blood once flowed.[break] Her secondborn’s people received her pelt, which had once given freedom.[break] Her thirdborn’s people received her word, so that they might preserve and remember it.[break] These treasures they have kept long and kept hidden, so that none may call the AllMother without the aid of the others.[break] - from The First Cants, date unknown[break][break]
For as long as anyone can remember, vampires and werewolves have clashed quietly, away from the view of humans. They have participated at the backdrop of every great conflict, usually on different sides, but they have been the stuff of legends. No human dared to believe they existed any more than unicorns or dragons did, and so they cast them as villains or heroes or love-interests or toothless teenage fantasies. Humans buried their knowledge of the supernatural world deep down, and perhaps they would have preferred it to stay that way.[break][break]
Tensions have a tendency to rise to the surface, and within the last 3 years, the ongoing battle of wills between vampires and werewolves spilled into the public sphere. Several Louisiana government officials were outed as werewolves, and not to be undone, they brought to light a number of vampire nests and then witch covens. The ensuing chaos devastated local nests and covens, and werewolves were able to win an unprecedented upperhand. It started in an isolated pocket of New Orleans and spread like wildfire, and humans and supernaturals everywhere were rocked by the news. First, chaos reigned until New Orleans could be wrestled back under control, and now an uneasy peace seems to sleep over the Big Easy.[break][break]
After the big reveal, werewolves have taken more and more leadership positions, and Louisiana’s newly elected, first openly werewolf governor sits in his Baton Rouge mansion. Their influence has cowed once proud vampires, and the threat of their strength has historically kept human insurgencies low. Groups, however, have begun to amass, and human animosity is on the rise. With the opening of a new mixed-species school, supernaturals are still learning to get along with themselves, much less humans.[break][break]
