PERSONALITY
CLOSED | AWKWARD | KIND Orin seems to be the other side to Iola's coin. Where she's open and carefree, Orin is reserved and cautious. He doesn't trust easily, but when someone has earned it, they have been adopted into the fold forever. And forever is a long time when you're undead.
Orin comes off as your typical siren upon first contact. He may seem snooty, or standoffish, but it's mostly just because he doesn't know how to properly behave around anyone who isn't 100+ years old. Orin doesn't like to make close ties anymore, especially with humans because their life will just be a blink in the span of his life. He doesn't intentionally look down on the human race, but 100+ years of living as a 28 year old adds some haughtiness he hasn't quite worked out of his system. Even still, Orin was not born of a mean heart - he tries to be kind when he's not overwhelmed by the awkward.
HISTORY
In 1891, Charles William Richards was born to Australian couple Elizabeth and James Richards. He was thirty minutes behind his twin sister, Margaret.
The two grew up nearly inseparable, though Charles always seemed to wilt in Margaret's shadow. She was always the bold personality, the person to step on toes and speak her mind. Charles minded proper etiquette and often scolded her for being so abrasive with her actions. He just knew it would get her in trouble one day.
And it did.
In 1919 Margaret disappeared. She had spent most of the year campaigning against a particularly corrupt politician. It was after the man had lost the local election that Margaret went missing. Quietly, Charles began digging into his sister's life the days leading up to her disappearance. The more questions he asked, the more answers pointed to a corrupt politician being in the pocket of the mafia.
One day, Charles had asked too many questions. Too many people were suspicious. And just as his sister had, he too disappeared. In the Spring of 1920, Charles William Richards died. What rose in his wake was something many would call a monster.
Upon waking in the water, the man didn't notice the oddness of his fins, or the fact that he was indeed breathing under the sea. What he did notice, however, was a hunger deeply a part of his being. No amount of fish or seaweed could fill that hunger. The man searched for more.
It was nearly blindingly bright when the man broke the surface of the water. While he seemed to recognize the glowing orb in the sky was the sun, and he was swimming in the ocean, he couldn't seem to piece together how it was he got there. The more he tried to think on it, the denser the fog grew. He simply knew he had a calling back to shore, one he couldn't ignore.
So he swam. Faster than should've been humanly possible. That should've been his third clue, but nothing was adding up anymore.
Upon reaching the shore, that ravenous hunger inside of the man was pulsating throughout his body. He needed to satiate it. All he could see was red. All he could hear was the thundering of a heart in someone else's chest. He didn't know the woman who he devoured. He doubt that she knew him either. It was all just a terrible coincidence of wrong place and wrong time.
The man's feast was interrupted by a pretty looking blonde. He understood the obscenities she was whispering under her breath as she tried to cover the evidence he had left behind. He obeyed when she told him to hop into the ocean and wash the blood off of himself. He even followed her when she told him to come home with her.
The woman introduced herself as Iola. She was like him. One evening she woke up under water with no memory of how she got there and a ravenous hunger in her heart. Since then, she's been studying, trying to figure out who or what she is.
Iola had decided on 'mermaids' as it was the closest explanation to their ties with the water. The man thought it a silly idea, but couldn't ignore the similarities between himself and the myths. While studying alongside Iola, he grew tired of being a nameless no one, and took on the mantle of Orin Hyde. From then on, he deemed himself this strange woman's brother, and they vowed to figure out their weird lives together.
Years passed, and as the world decayed beside them, they stood fast against the tide of time. The friends they had made as Iola and Orin grew old and died, while they remained the same. Their unchanging appearance drew attention - very unwanted attention as they had both participated in homicide. So they fled the only place they knew as home and never looked back. The two traveled the world - Iola grew tired of trying to find information. She just wanted to live. Orin, however, let his guilt control him. He spent decades trying to find what made them the way they were. He sat most nights on the ocean wherever they were, searching for others like them. Hopefully, to save some poor soul like Iola saved him. Or to end it before it even began. Orin was never certain.
Within the past 20 years, Orin had made great leaps in his knowledge. The boom of the internet and any information he wanted at his fingertips made it leaps and bounds easier to find out what he wanted to know. He finally came to the conclusion that he and Iola were sirens. And they weren't the only ones. Sirens were born when a human with a dormant werewolf gene dies in water. Upon this discovery, Orin finally knew where to look. Mysterious deaths and disappearances near water began adding up with homicides in the surrounding areas. Some drownings seemed intentional - like a roving pack of Sirens were somehow trying to create more.
With this information, Orin tried to track them down, always seemingly a step behind them. In 2016 he followed the trail to New Orleans, Louisiana. With such a booming supernatural population it's no wonder they made their way to the bayou city. Taking a night job as a bartender at the Rising Sun, he spent most of his days researching this rogue pack of Sirens and water related deaths. Iola spent her time partying around Europe and finally managed to make her way back to him in 2019, still having no idea of the connections he'd made in his secret investigation there.
Presently, the only person he's confided his theory with is his boss, close friend, and vampire Atticus Caine. There hasn't been any break in his case so far, but Orin feels like he's close to something big, and it's going to happen soon.
